It was 100 years ago when the United Nations put forth a day to celebrate the economic, political, and social achievements of Women past, present, and future. In places such as China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women's Day is a National Holiday. This marks the 6th year WIFTI joins in that celebration with our Short Film Showcase. These films have first been selected by the participating WIFTI Chapters from submissions created by their members. Each Chapters' selections were sent to the WIFTI screening committee to compile this, the 2011 Showcase Program. The films were all truly wonderful and WIFTI congratulates all the filmmakers on their efforts. We hope this inspires you to make your own film for next year's celebration.

Two student filmmakers were honored October 8th at the 8th Annual Chick Flicks Film Festival held by the non-profit organization Women In Film.Dallas.
Each year the festival features short films created and produced by women across the state of Texas, celebrating the work of women in the film industry while raising funds for female students studying film, television, or video production in the North Texas region.
The 2009 winners are Elizabeth Johnston of Southern Methodist University and Rachel Gibson Shepherd of the University of Texas at Arlington.
Ms. Johnston was awarded a $2500 tuition scholarship and Ms. Shepherd was selected to receive the college student project grant of $5,000 in completion funds from both WIF.D and Sync Point Post, a Dallas-based post- production house.
"The quality of applicants made the selection process extremely difficult. The WIF.D Education Committee was greatly impressed with the level of professionalism they exhibited which bodes well for the industry as a whole,” said Lynne Reynolds, co-chair of the WIF.D Education Committee. “We sincerely hope they have found our organization to be a useful resource during their education and beyond. Women in Film Dallas will continue to proudly support the endeavors of these young women as they advance into their chosen careers.”
To learn how you can apply for the scholarships to be awarded in 2010 or are looking for an internship in the industry, please contact education@wifdallas.org or visit www.wifdallas.org for more information.

Arvind Singh – UNT
Arvind was born to a theatre couple, raised on the stage. Her father is a well known Punjabi Playwright and as stage Director used theatre as a tool of mass awareness. She was actively involved with his group as an actor and organizer. Traveling with him from village to village with the theatre group, she noticed the effect of the art although limited because it reached only a small section of society. Arvind wanted to reach more people in India and throughout the world but was unsure what creative medium to use.
From this frustration and her idealism, she began practicing law at the age of 22. However, her dream of changing the world crumbled when she realized that the people who needed help the most or were victims of a corrupt society were often unaware that they’d been wronged. Returning to her original idea, she had to find a creative and wide ranging awareness tool that was stimulating and would help the people understand the corrupt system in which they lived.
Documentary films seemed to be the viable answer and this realization gave birth to her first production company in India named Srijan (To Create). She faced many obstacles because it was impossible to get grants or any financial aid for what she wanted to achieve. Finally the situation in Punjab deteriorated due to State oppression and the people’s retaliation to State terrorism. Arvind ended up making a documentary on this subject but it offended the watchdogs of the system and she decided to move to America.
Wanting to continue to make films, she decided to learn the craft aspect of the art and joined the Masters of Fine Arts program with the University of North Texas. Women In Film.Dallas has provided finishing funds for her film, “The Rising Tide” through the 2008 scholarship program. In the introduction of her business plan Arvind wrote, “Amidst the deafening noise created by the mainstream American media, some people are trying to recover the voice of the people that has the ultimate power to question the actions of their system. Ironically, this muffled voice never reaches the outside world creating an impression that American people are either too complacent or ignorant towards the miseries of the rest of the world...” Clearly, the talents of Arvind Singh can change that misconception.
$1500 Tuition Scholarship
Sharie Vance – UT Arlington
When Sharie Vance submitted her essay with her WIF.D Scholarship application, she chose the title “Making a Difference” and in her opening line she quotes Abraham Maslow: “A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What one can be, one must be.”
While raising her family of 4, Sharie took jobs strictly for the income. After her children were grown she realized she could no longer force herself to work at jobs that had no meaning. Always wanting to creatively express herself and make a difference in the world, Sharie had been raised to believe that one could not do both at the same time – that it wasn’t practical. After putting together a video for a past employer, she discovered an outlet for her talents but it took over a year to develop the courage to go back to school and pursue something that wasn’t “practical”.
As a student she has watched herself do things she’s never thought possible, such as making a short film, two music videos and a documentary called “Shelter Walkers”. It was her reaction to this documentary about animal rescue that wiped away any lingering doubts. She has had an overwhelming response from people who were moved by the story she wrote and produced which has resulted in saving the lives of countless animals in North Texas. In her own eyes, something even better has happened. Sharie’s children now think of her as their hero, inspired by her example to strive for their own dreams. Women In Film.Dallas is proud to award Sharie Vance the tuition scholarship as she continues to grow as a filmmaker.
WomenInFilm.Dallas and the Dallas Women's Foundation are proud to present filmmaker Libby Spears' acclaimed documentary, "Playground," followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker, on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at Studio Movie Grill - Royal Lane.
"Wherever drugs are being sold, children are being sold."
- Eileen Jacobs, FBI
Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery that affects both Americans and foreigners, according to Children At Risk, the Houston-based advocacy and research center. It affects everyone, but women and children are its most vulnerable victims. And while human trafficking is a relatively unknown issue, Texas has become a hub for the international crime because of its interstate highways, bus stations, airports, shipping, a large amount of sexually oriented businesses, and its shared border with Mexico.
"For $1,500, you can rent a ten year-old for the weekend."
- Portland, OR
Spears' "Playground" is a hard-hitting, investigative look at the sex trade and human trafficking in the United States. She tempers hard-hitting facts and stark statistics with innovative animation and a thoughtful soundtrack, including music by Bjork, Radiohead, Chris Martin, Blonde Redhead, Cat Power, Sigur Rós, CocoRosie, Basement Jaxx, DJ Shadow, and Kazu Makino.
Executive Produced by Dallas philanthropists Lauren & Gayle Embrey, as well as George Clooney, Grant Heslov, Steven Soderbergh, Abby Disney, and Jeff Vespa, the film gracefully weaves together expert interviews with personal stories. At the heart of it lies Michelle, an American girl lost to the underbelly of childhood sexual exploitation who has yet to resurface a decade later.
The screening begins at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a Q&A from the filmmaker. Tickets are $5 for members and SMU students and $8 for nonmembers. Nonprofits are invited to purchase blocks of tickets at the discounted member price. For more information, please email chickflicks@wifdallas.org or publicity@wifdallas.org.
